The camp is very communicative with parents. They provide a ton of information from registration all the way through the end of the camping session. They are extremely helpful in communicating with the campers during the session, and have the entire check-in/check-out experience extremely efficient. The kids seem to have a blast.
I really appreciate the thoughtful approach to values-driven programming. I also deeply appreciate the camp's visible commitment to diversity.
I loved the regular communication, the variety of great activities, the fabulous staff, and my kids liked the food. I appreciated that the camp could so thoughtfully accommodate my kids' allergies.
Our son Sebastien had the best experience in session 3 so far, and this was his 3rd summer there. We have raved to ask of our friends about his experience and what it does for his independence and self esteem!
I mean, where to start?! It would take too long to really describe all the ways in which Ocky/Matolly are such a great choice for our kiddos. But, a short list would include:
The facilities
The staff
The food
The friends
The activities
The memories
No electronics(!)
We have been so happy with YMCA of the Pines as a choice for Aurora & JD! Thanks for making this place so special!
The fact that they encourage independence and life skills. I also appreciate how the value of traditions is a focus. My son had the exact experience I hoped he would. I was extremely impressed by the support system there as well. How amazing to know there is a daily mtg for leadership to discuss all campers. To have a social worker on site was very reassuring since my child has anxiety. The focus on mental health and expressing feelings was great.
My son did the mini camp and he loved it. He is very shy and has trouble making friends but the counselors were great at including him and helping him feel comfortable. He loved fishing and climbing the rock wall. The pride on his face when he told me about reaching the top of the rock wall to ring the bell was priceless. We look forward to attending next year for a longer session.
The counselors seem great- energetic, enthusiastic, fun and kind. I like my child having a week-long break from their cell phone. I like the fun outdoor activities available for my child- such as rock-wall climbing, camping out under the stars, biking, etc...I like the opportunity for my child to meet other kids from different towns, etc...I like the traditional type of camp setting that Ockanickon offers and I like the values and traditions the camp has. My son has had a positive experience this summer and last summer.
My son very much enjoyed his experience at camp. Between the people he met and the activities they did, plus the fact of not having electronics, it was a refreshing and happy experience for him.
Disconnecting from screens and toys, getting back to nature, the emphasis on a variety of activities to appeal to all sorts of boys (athlete, monk, artisan, etc), healthy variety in the menu, lots of traditions to look forward to next year.
My son liked how they were always doing something, and he loved the competition! He liked the philosophy behind the activities. As a parent, I liked the focus on the character traits that were discussed throughout the week.
