I never grew up with a "neighborhood bike shop". it's honestly the best thing. My daughter picked out a bike there, and we did a 10mi ride to go pick out a water bottle and cage. doesn't get much better than that.

Everything I may need is or could be available. Time and effort are just always available even with my rather old, rusty 2-wheel relic. Dan and his co-workers don't openly grumble trying to work with or around rusted parts and will do all they can to make the bike usable.
