I had a rotted patio door frame (bottom portion) and other repair services wanted to replace the entire door and frame. Mr Handyman of NW austin offered the service i was looking for (replacing the rotted portion of the frame). They quoted the service after i sent them photos of the damage, and the repair was scheduled soon thereafter.
I will definately use them again for future home repairs.
I like the ease in making an appointment. The gentleman who came to my house was very polite and did a good job with the tasks I required. I think the cost is a little prohibitive for some simple tasks such as putting up towel racks. I would like to see more of a sliding scale for labor dependent on the complexity of the task.
Gilbert Zapiain is your company's face to Austin/Round Rock and he makes a fabulous impression! My first experience with Gilbert occurred in mid February when a work crew who had taken everything out of my garage to paint, abandoned post and left my garage unpainted with its substantial contents in the driveway. Gilbert agreed to come after 5 pm to finish the job in an emergency situation (after putting in an exhausting day elsewhere).
I was immediately impressed with this wiry young man. His COMPETENCE first caught my attention. In the first 90 minutes, he was almost half way through painting my garage - he had accomplished what two workmen could not seem to get done in two weeks.
The second thing that stood out to me was his ATTITUDE. Gilbert is unflappable. No matter what comes his way, he never expresses frustration or impatience. He literally whistles while he works! He has the best work ethic and attitude I have ever experienced. He is also very polite. He listens respectfully to my concerns and responds appropriately. (Whenever I would express my wishes to the previous crew, the lead man would boorishly ask me, "Are you the contractor?" I had to point out to him that I was the homeowner and I wanted the work a certain way. An awful experience. This crew was so bad that my contractor fired them.) As you can imagine after my previous experience, being listened to and respected was a relief.
The third thing that stands out about Gilbert is the way he cleans up after the job is done. I didn't feel like I needed to clean up after him and that was a huge weight lifted off of me.
The fourth thing that really sets Gilbert apart from the others is his ability to troubleshoot. I had Gilbert return in the first week of March to finish the job. He connected the plumbing up to the new sinks in my remodeled bathroom. Gilbert noticed immediately that my decorative, copper-hammered sinks from India were not meshing well with my American faucets. He went to Home Depot to buy parts that would make the two work together, and he even came up with some creative ways to finish the job so that it was up to code. He never expressed exasperation or frustration. He seems to like taking on the challenge of figuring out how to do things other workmen would give up on or blame the homeowner for. His creativity, expertise and troubleshooting abilities truly set Gilbert apart from even the experts. These abilities cannot be taught in a vocational school - you have to be born with them. Gilbert is a natural.
At the end of Gilbert's second visit, he patched up the plaster and drywall that the previous crew has botched. He not only does quality work himself, but he makes other workers' jobs look good, too.
Gilbert is truly a treasure. My contractor who fired the previous crew works out of San Antonio and he is trying to get a branch of his water damage business started in Austin. However, he says that he is having a difficult time finding the right workers. None of them have Gilbert's skills or attitude. I was tempted to tell him about Gilbert, but I didn't want to do that to your company. Give Gilbert a raise or something. He is a "best kept secret" in the Austin-area right now, but sooner or later word is going to get out. Skilled workers with the right people skills are in short supply in this area. You need to give him an incentive to stay.
Thanks again for sending Gilbert. I have absolutely no DIY skills and I am always in the midst of projects, so next time I will call your company to begin with and save myself a whole lot of trouble and time.
Very happy with the service. The lady on the phone (Rebecca) was professional, friendly and followed up. The gentleman (Marty) who came out to perform a tough hard wood repair job did a great job and supper friendly.
I would use Mr Handyman again without hesitation.
