I appreciate the number of group classes on the schedule, and would honestly like even more in the 6:00-8:00 am timeframe. Cycle, body pump, HIIT style, and mobility classes would be my top picks for programming, but the most important thing is having a knowledgeable, engaging instructor (high marks for Rainy Snyder, Julie Carlton)
I don’t do any programs or activities, but I feel the facilities are always spotless and the staff is friendly. The new equipment is noticeable and is a wonderful upgrade.
Attending the Northside YMCA is a good experience. It's not overly crowded when I attend, which is weekday afternoons, and sometimes weekend afternoons.
Positive observations:
building is overall a clean and organized facility
equipment is accessible and in well maintained condition
ample pool hours
friendly staff who keep operations running smooth and are ready to assist
good programs for youth - seem to be well run, caring and engaged staff
In the past I have taken classes which are excellent! Recently, I've stuck to working out on my own because I find it difficult to sign up, due to the classes being that popular. I do like that members are allowed to use a spinning cycle on their own to get a good workout.
I love the group exercise classes and how friendly everyone is!
I do feel that some things have fallen apart a little since Julie left (canceled classes etc). I hope that can be remedied. It would be good to have someone in Julie’s old position.
I would like to get involved in the aerobics classes and the water aerobics classes.
I am currently running 4-5 miles in Bryan Park.....However my knees are starting to give me trouble. I am a former marathon and half marathon runner. It has taken a toll on my knees. So I am going to have to do something else. I will definitely be going online in search of the YMCA Northside classes.
The atmosphere in the weight room has improved. New trainers and room attendants have made a huge difference.
I am relatively new to the Y, so I haven't made a lot of use of classes or extra programs. My primary use is the gym facilities. It has everything I need for an effective workout without being super crowded and full of ego. I used to go to Crunch always and it's just so hard to get to use the machines or benches or racks without waiting a very long time, particularly in peak hours. So far I haven't had any issues at the Y Northside. Everyone, staff and members, have been kind and supportive. The facilities are clean and typically all working and even the pool is undergoing maintenance but will be back up very soon which means they're working diligently to keep things nice and running. It's probably not the right place for a power lifter or someone far above my level to go, but I can get a very rewarding morning workout when I go and that makes me very happy with my membership.
