My child was having a tough time fitting in, as we all know how crucial that is, especially during the teenage years. She started showing interest in music and I suggested she try out School of Rock to meet like-minded individuals. It didn't take long for her to make friends and excel at playing the bass. She now looks forward to her weekly sessions and finds solace in being present while playing. Music has truly been a lifesaver for her, sparking new dreams along the way.
All-star behaviors are really important. Adult musician mentorship is priceless. Performing music kids want to play and their friends want to hear is key.
I love that my child feels like her band is family. She would spend every night at SOR if I would let her!! SOR has helped her emotionally through a rough year. Her love for music is now priceless.
I enjoyed learning songs and getting to play in a show.
The half hour private lesson goes too quickly though, and I feel like I just get there and it's over. I feel 45" would be more worthwhile as an adult and maybe have the group practice be an hour and 15".
Overall, I'm enjoying the program.
Thanks
I'm "graduating" from the School to pursue auditioning for the worship band at Grace Church, which is where I worship. My hope for the School is that, going forward, the sense of community and the welcoming and encouraging environment that was so important and helpful to me will continue now that Katy has left. I will always gratefully remember the warm welcome Mitch gave we when I showed up on a Saturday afternoon, after hours. He invited me to observe the Adult Band that was practicing then, and someone invited me to sit in for a few songs. That was in January, 2023. I enrolled right away, and I have had a wonderful experience. Derek, my instructor and Adult Band leader has been excellent. He has known my skill level, and has given me a part to play in all the songs. Also, he has increased my skill level at just the right pace. I have joked that he has been my Mr. Miyagi - he taught me scales (wax on, wax off - sand the floor - paint the fence) and those skills prepared me to play the short solo parts I am playing this season. I wrote lyrics for a song, "Ode to School of Rock," that tells how the School influenced me, my older son, Jeff, my brother, DJ, and brought joy to my younger son, Brian, and his family.
